Transport

Getting Here

Edinburgh Airport is a 20 minute bus ride from the centre of the city (and not much faster by taxi). These buses (number 100) arrive and depart from the Waverley Bridge, just outside the railway station in the centre of the city. International services are available from Edinburgh, with a variety of companies operating flights. British Airways, British Midland, KLM and EasyJet are amongst the more frequent services.

Railway journeys end in the heart of the city at the Waverley railway station. Edinburgh is on the fast east coast line, with London trains taking little more than four and a half hours to reach Edinburgh.

Information about the main London trains can be found on the GNER web site. Trains from Birmigham and the west of England can be found on the Virgin trains web page. Trains services within Scotland are detailed on the Scotrail web site.

Road connections, whether by bus, or car, reach Edinburgh either via the main A1 road up through the east side of England and Newcastle, or via the M6 motorway from the west side, going through Carlisle. The National Buses web page provides information about all UK bus services. Scottish inter-city bus routes are presented on their CityLink web page.

A new ferry service now connects the port of Rosyth, just across the Firth of Forth, with Holland on the other side of the North Sea. A similar car ferry also connects continental Europe to Newcastle, from where one can drive up to Edinburgh in about two and a half hours.

Transport in the City

Edinburgh has an excellent and comprehensive bus service. The major city service is run by Lothian Transport (red and white buses), with another company First also providing a city wide service. Both companies use double-decker buses, with single decker buses used on shorter or less popular routes.

It is important to present exactly the correct change when you get onto a bus - the bus drivers do NOT give change! If you don't have exactly the right change, then try not to give more than you need. Ask fellow travellers at the bus stop if they can give you change. Everyone does this to help each other out.

If you are going to be travelling about a lot during the day, why not buy a day ticket, for unlimited travel? It becomes even cheaper after 9.30am, when the morning rush hour has finished.

Needless to say, there are taxis everywhere. These are the black taxis, probably familiar to those who have been to London.

Maps of the City

Numerous maps exist for Edinburgh, and many can be found on the internet. Here are a few - Falcon, Multimap, and Streetmap.
